In a world where flowers are treated like a lifeless commodity, Nebulosa Design Studios is committed to using local, seasonal botanicals in every design project that they create. Before globalization, there was no such thing as Slow Floristry; the art of arranging flowers was contained within the confines of time and place, and there was no other option but to celebrate blooms as they came and went. Now, the floral design industry has become far removed from the foundations of this practice in alarming ways due to the immediate availability of imported flowers grown in industrial, unethical ways all over the globe.
Instead of shipping flowers wrapped in plastic on refrigerated planes across the world to outfit an event, Nebulosa encourages clients to embrace the natural beauty that surrounds them, here and now. This approach requires collaborations with local farmers as well as time spent foraging for wild botanicals that are local to the region. While this often makes Nebulosa’s design initiatives more complicated, McKenzie and her team delight in the challenges that come along with standing firmly in their convictions.
